Aging Well Means Keeping the Heart Beating

At Freudenthal Home-Based Healthcare, we believe aging well isn’t about slowing down—it’s about continuing to live with purpose, connection, and heart. That’s exactly why we’re honored to recognize Melody Smith as our March 2026 Aging Well Award Winner.

A Lifetime of Leadership and Service

Melody’s journey is one of dedication, perseverance, and impact.

After beginning her career at Hillyard Industries, she returned to college as a non-traditional student—determined to finish what she started. That decision set her on a path that would shape countless lives in the St. Joseph community.

Over the course of 28 years with the St. Joseph School District, Melody served as:

  • Teacher

  • Assistant Principal

  • Director of Secondary Education

  • And ultimately, the first female Superintendent

Her mission was simple—but powerful:

“Educating each child for success.”

And for Melody, that meant truly seeing each individual child—not just academically, but emotionally and socially.

Retirement… But Not Really

For many, retirement is a time to slow down.

For Melody—it was just a transition.

After just 90 days, she found herself back to work at Missouri Western State University, where she spent nearly eight more years continuing to serve, including helping launch the Center for Service.

Even now, Melody continues to give back—serving on boards, mentoring others, and quietly working behind the scenes to strengthen the community she loves.

“We Are the Heart of This Community”

When asked what drives her to keep going, Melody didn’t hesitate:

“I believe the citizens of this community are the heart of who we are… and the heart has to keep beating.”

That belief fuels everything she does.

Her focus remains clear:

  • Supporting youth

  • Lifting others up

  • Strengthening community health and connection

Not for recognition—but for impact.

A Life of Mentorship

Melody has mentored countless individuals throughout her life, but she sees mentorship not as a role—but as a relationship.

“If someone poured into me, then I feel compelled to pour into others.”

From students to international university groups—some of whom still call her “American mom”—her influence continues across generations and even across borders.

Faith in Action

As the daughter of a preacher, Melody’s faith has always been central to her life.

That faith led her to create “Women Who Pray,” a growing community of women across the country who come together with one simple purpose:

“We just pray.”

No politics. No divisions. Just prayer.

Now in its third year, the group continues to provide encouragement, support, and real connection in a world that often feels disconnected.

What Does Aging Well Mean?

For Melody, aging well isn’t complicated:

“Get up every day and don’t forget what you were called to do.”

It’s about continuing to live with intention—finding what fills your heart, and using that to serve others.

“When you fill your heart, you’ll fill the hearts of others.”

Joy in This Season

Today, Melody finds joy in her family—especially her grandchildren and great-grandson, who she says has “brought her youth back.”

But even more than that, she finds joy in connection—in relationships, in community, and in continuing to live out her purpose.

A Final Word of Wisdom

When asked what message she would leave others, Melody offered this:

“Let go of anger. Hold onto relationships. And get out of yourself.”

Simple. Honest. Powerful.

Celebrating a Life Well Lived—and Still Living

Melody Smith is a shining example of what it truly means to age well.

Not stepping back—but stepping forward.Not withdrawing—but investing.Not slowing down—but continuing to serve.

And in doing so, she reminds us all:

The heart of a community only beats if we keep it alive.
