Aging Well: A Friendship That Never Quit

For February 2026, Freudenthal is proud to recognize Mary Shelton as our Aging Well Award recipient — a woman whose life has been defined not by recognition, but by decades of quiet, faithful care for others.

Sometimes the people who change our lives the most live right next door.

Mary’s story is best told through the voice of someone who has experienced her kindness firsthand — her longtime friend and neighbor, Pauline Mejia.

Their friendship began more than five decades ago, when Mary was a single mother raising three children while working night shifts. Pauline lived nearby and saw how hard Mary worked to provide for her family.

Knowing Mary couldn’t always attend school events because of her work schedule, Pauline stepped in. She took the children to school activities, homecoming, prom, and other important milestones so they wouldn’t miss out on their childhood.

“They became like my own little kids,” Pauline recalled.

For years, Pauline helped Mary’s family simply because she cared.

But life has a way of coming full circle.

Decades later, when Pauline suffered severe burn injuries that nearly cost her an arm, Mary immediately stepped in to care for her. She traveled to be with her, stayed by her side, advocated for her medical treatment, and helped nurse her through months of recovery.

“She was there day and night,” Pauline said. “If it wasn’t for Mary, I might have lost my arm.”

And Mary didn’t stop there.

When Pauline later suffered a stroke, Mary was again the first person she called. Even while sick herself, Mary continued bringing supplies, checking in, and making sure her friend had everything she needed.

To Mary, the reason is simple.

“My kids wouldn’t have gotten to do a lot of things if it wasn’t for her,” Mary explained. “I can’t pay her back… all I can give people is my time.”

At 77 years old, Mary continues to live by that philosophy.

She watches out for neighbors. She helps those who struggle. She checks in when someone needs groceries, assistance, or simply someone to call.

“There’s always somebody that needs help,” Mary said. “You may think you’ve got problems, but somebody else has it worse.”

That mindset — putting others first — is exactly what the Aging Well Award celebrates.

Mary spent 34 years working at Silgan Containers, raising her family, supporting her community, and quietly becoming the kind of person everyone hopes lives nearby when life gets hard.

Pauline describes it best:

“She’s got a heart bigger than her body.”
